This magic valley is renowned for being home to one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, the town of Bienno, and the largest complex of rock drawings in Europe, a UNESCO World Heritage since 1979. Plagued for decades by intense industrial activity and lack of resources for the responsible development of the territory, it now experiences a renaissance thanks to the resident's wish to leave the next generation with a better future. Citizen movements and ethical initiatives, like the Bio-Districts, lead the change by protecting the valley's pristine nature and promoting its sustainable management. The Val Camonica became a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in 2018.
Renowned for its hiking trails and biking paths, Malegno boasts a young agricultural scene and progressive mayor that takes pride in re-imagining a meaningful idea of community.
In 2012, the Lombardy Region recognized Malegno with a special mention for the Premio per la Pace, Regional Peace Awards, to celebrate its efforts in raising awareness and understanding about inclusiveness and the peaceful coexistence of diversity.
In 2012, the village became one of the 120 municipalities joining forces with The Do-Good Boroughs Association, a national network of small Italian towns working together to create positive change.
The national initiative fosters harmonious and sustainable development by improving citizens education and providing them with informed choices that can improve the community wellbeing.
